Are Grandparents Important
One part of my book, I talk some of my grandpa. I only remember a few things. However, I remember the love I had for my grandpa and step grandma. One exerts from my book is, “One day Vivian and Ethel got in a fight and Ethel packs up our belongings, leaving with her panties in a ruffle, and off to Uncle Bob’s house we went. We didn’t stay with him long. Ethel found a house, and she decided it would be easier to be watched by Aunt Sonya and Uncle Bob if I was to live with my grandpa and my step-grandma. One of my earliest memories is of Grandma Florence coming in yelling at grandpa, “Watch her, she is going to be burned.” I jumped back when the teakettle came crashing down. Somehow, by God’s good grace, I came out of it unharmed. Oh, was Grandma mad at grandpa, she yelled at him, because he let me run around naked, and I was always tearing up the place, and he never knew what I was doing? She was amazed how he would ignore all of it. I started crying because I got my grandpa in trouble. Grandma had to stop yelling at him to get me to stop crying.”
Now Vivian is in my book a lot, she was an aunt of mine. I lived with her for a brief time as a baby and then she would babysit me along with another aunt in Sinclairville. I had other babysitters but mostly my Aunt Vivian and my Aunt Sonya and Uncle Bob. I will blog more about them later.
Right now, this blog is about grandparents and how important they are to their grandchildren. We are part of their legacy. If we did not have them, we would not be the people we are today. Not by any means discrediting the value of our parents. For only Christ is valued higher than our parents in molding us as moral and descent adults.“Proverbs 17:6 – Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. “Psalms 145:4 – One generation shall praise thy works to another and shall declare thy mighty acts.”
My grandpa would sing to me, “You are my sunshine” and rock me. I remember this to this day. He must have done that to my mom because she would do the same thing. I remember one time I was sick, and she rocked me and sang to me. He would spoil me rotten allowing me to do what ever I wanted and the exert above describes my favorite thing to do when I was little and that was strip down to my birthday suite and run around naked. I remember hating clothes.
But back to the importance of grandparents. After my grandpa died, we moved to Florida then my step grandma Florence moved there and got a house where she lived a couple blocks from us and my stepdad’s shop. We met him shortly after moving to Florida. Well, Grandma Florence never had any children and took care of my biological grandma that I never met. However, the stories passed down give me an idea of what she was like, and I feel as if I knew her. Well after grandma died Florence married my grandpa. When she moved to Florida it was the wintertime and during the summers she would live in her home in Jamestown, New York. She got to be all of our grandma that way. She would babysit me, and I have such fond memories of the times I would stay with her. She would make me homemade soup and sandwiches. She would sit and do knitting or crocheting, I am not sure which one. I would talk up a storm to her and she would listen. Some Sundays I would go to church with her, and I never really liked it because it was always in Latin and I did not understand, but I was happy to be with her.
Another Step Grandma I had was my Stepdad’s mom, she and I would go to church together and she would take me to her old lady events. I would love meeting her friends and talking about Jesus with all of them. When I moved to Philadelphia, it was with her and her son, Jim. I lived with them for 3 to 6 months, not sure how long. After mom and Richard, my stepdad moved to Philadelphia with my sister Dorothy, they all lived in the basement for a brief time. Then we moved to a house across the street. I still went to church with grandma but only every other week. She was United Methodist, and I was Southern Baptist, so I found a church somewhat similar to my liking, a Grace Baptist and would go to it the other weeks I did not go with my grandma.
I spent many days with grandma, her favorite song was “In the Garden,” she loved it when they would play it at her church.
I have fond memories of my conversations with my step grandma’s both loved Jesus and both would tell me about the Bible stories and moral lessons. They were instrumental in my growth in Jesus. It seems many of the people that I hold such fond memories of from my childhood were those who taught me and talked to me about Jesus. It was and still is my favorite subject. These grandma’s were Godly women who showed me the meaning of, “Titus 2: 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed”.
Another verse these women remind me of the faith of my grandmothers is, “2 Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also”.
I do feel bad I never meant my biological grandma’s both faithful women, both married to one man all their life. One Lutheran and one Pentecostal. I am sure they could both have taught me even more growing up about faith. However, God did bless me with grandmothers. They may not have been my blood grandmas, but they were my grandmas. I will always have such fond memories of them, and I hope my grandchildren will grow to love me like I loved them and to have fond memories of me when I am gone to live my life with the Lord.
